The Queen's Background

  • The Queen did not exist in the original game of chess. She ‘replaced the vizier, a male messenger to the king, when Persian traders brought chess to Europe

.

  • The chess queen gained her full powers in 1495 when Queen Isabella of Spain was the most powerful woman in Europe- possibly as a tribute to her.

  • Marilyn Yalom's "Birth of the Chess Queen: a History" for one theory behind the queen's power. Yalom connects the rise of the chess queen with the rise of female monarchs in Europe.

The Queen's Power

  • The queen might be considered the most powerful piece because she can control a large number of squares at a single point of time.

  • Her importance is also obvious from the fact that numerous international chess players have resigned from the game once their queen has been captured.

  • The queen is strongest when the board is open, when the enemy king is poorly defended, or when there are loose (i.e. undefended) pieces in the enemy camp.

  • The queen is typically worth about nine pawns, which is slightly stronger than a rook and a bishop together, but slightly less strong than two rooks, though there are exceptions. It is almost always disadvantageous to exchange the queen for a single piece other than the enemy's queen.

  • An important factor is also the affect of this loss on you opponent.

  • Many great players have fallen trap to the discomfort and discouragement of losing their queen.

  • We recommend reading or watching The Queen's Gambit for fun and to get a better and more useful knowledge of gambit's and chess plays.

  • It's not only important to play well inside your own mind, you must make this clear in the mind of your opponent as well.

When Is The Tennison Gambit Effective?

The Tennison Gambit is an aggressive line against the Scandinavian defense (see picture) that starts with the moves: 1. e4 d5 2. Nf3

  • Black is almost always going to capture the pawn on e4 and white should respond with Ng5.
  • This puts black in an interesting position.
  • If black tries to hold onto the pawn advantage there are many lines where black will forfeit his position or even the lead in material.
  • If black does not hold onto the material, white can recapture and have a very good development in the game.
  • With perfect play, black will come out ahead, so be careful trying to play this opening against really good opponents.
  • For someone that is unfamiliar with this as black it can be very difficult to play correctly.

A Gambit's Trick : Strings ARE attached

  • The game starts, and your opponent offers you a pawn or a piece very early.
  • Your mind as a beginner is excited about this easy opportunity and you gladly take it.
  • However, almost all easy gains in chess can cost you threefold.
  • You are usually looking at a gambit: a gambit happens in chess when a player gives up material during the opening to seek some kind of compensation. Most gambits require the sacrifice of one or more pawns, while a few of them involve sacrificing more valuable pieces.
